Today, Ray works as a Tennessee State Trooper and a TAPT Executive which he has done for the past quarter century. He is based in Nashville, and lives  in Warren County. Ray is the head of the pupil transportation division of the Highway Patrol and also serves as Tennessee’s chief safety inspector for school buses. Ray was a member of the Cannon County football team from 1980-1984, and he was one of those special athletes who played a lot of positions, except for quarterback. During his first three years, he played on the line.When a new coach came in during his senior year, Ray was moved to the backfield. He was named to All-Midstate twice and All-State during his senior year. He was selected for the All-South team and played in the Tennessee-Kentucky All-Star Game. Coach Phil Fulmer invited him to join the University of Tennessee Volunteers where he played center all four years.
